Aftersun, suggestions, favorite movies of 2022

Hello Film Clubbers!

It was great seeing so many of you at the meeting last week, including some new faces! We had a great discussion of Aftersun — a movie that spoke deeply to a lot of attendees, even bringing some to tears — while others felt kept at somewhat of a remove. I always admire how this group makes room for even the most extreme disagreements, and that you all feel so comfortable sharing your thoughts and emotions, even when in the minority. We talked a lot about memoir and memory, and worked to unpack the slippery nature of the latter. We also touched on the perils that lurk when one seeks to understand someone who isn’t completely knowable. To what extent are we creating a fiction to serve our own needs, rather than seeking truth? Is this impulse more destructive than helpful?

It was an intense discussion at times, but it wasn’t without its share of levity too! I can’t wait to see you all in January, when we will kick off the new year with the great The Banshees of Inisherin!
