Next Meeting: Monday, May 12, 6:30pm
Location: Zoom
Hello Film Clubbers!
We had a fantastic discussion of Nickel Boys this past Monday. We covered a lot of ground, including the art of adaptation, the film’s employment of POV, the skill involved in knowing what to show onscreen and what not to show onscreen, and oh so much more. You all really brought your A-game, and it was lovely to see how affected many of you were by the film. I hope a disc is released someday so more of you can see it and revisit it.
Speaking of affected…a couple weeks back, TRL/ALA put out a call for “library stars” and several of you took the time to write some truly lovely things about Film Club. I can’t begin to tell you how special it is that so many of you find Film Club to be such a meaningful addition to your lives. There are countless things pulling at our attention, and every month I’m amazed by how many of you continue to come along on this adventure. Film Club was the first program I ever had a hand in developing, and while I’ve been lucky to be involved with creating so many groovy things for the library, Film Club will always be nearest to my heart. I’ve learned so much from all of you — my movie-watching life, my work life, and my day-to-day life has improved by simply being in your orbit. We are coming up on Film Club’s 7th birthday, and many of you have been with us from the beginning. Many of you have gone on to volunteer at OFS, and have made friends through Film Club. It’s a special thing. I never expect any kind words, but hoo boy do they mean a lot all the same. This group wouldn’t exist without all of you, and everything you bring to the table. It wouldn’t exist without my colleagues, who provide me the support to keep this thing humming. So you can always feel free to give one of them a thumbs up whenever the spirit moves you :)
Thank you all so much. Film Club turns 7 in July…I’m hoping to do something special around that time. Until then, see you at the movies and in the library!

Here is how to get a card with Seattle Public Library — should you want to get that sweet sweet Hoopla, more Kanopy credits, and a deeper Libby catalog.
Several times at Film Club, someone has remarked upon a character drinking a glass of milk. If you think such an onscreen act is innocuous, perhaps check out this article.
Val Kilmer was mentioned several times, including once by me, because his commentary for the David Mamet movie Spartan is beautiful thing. Here’s a best-of compilation of some choice moments.
I’m sorry I missed this session because I loved Nickel Boys. And I can’t thank you enough for including Val Kilmer’s Mamet-slam! Too much and yet, not enough. Sleep well, my prince.
